Imphal, September 07, 2010:
A mortuary cabin with cold storage facilities which can accomodate six dead bodies at a time has been installed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).
Utilization of the cabin will start from September 15. Official sources said that the mortuary cabin with cold storage facilities installed at JNIMS was manufactured by the New Delhi based Blue Star Company.
The JNIMS authority bought it at a cost of Rs 9.50 lakh through a supply agency based in Guwahati.
Mechanics from outside the state were engaged in the installation of the cabin.
To start the functioning of the mortuary cabin which can keep dead bodies without being decomposed for long periods of time a process has begun to connect a dedicated power line which would supply electricity round the clock, the source said.
The cabin was planned to function from August 22 but was deffered due technical problems in the installation process but hectic works are on ensure its functioning from September 15, the official source maintained.
Once the mortuary cabin is functional, it would help the hospital to preserve dead bodies after postmortem for longer periods of time.
There is a huge advantage in conducting a postmortem examination before a body get decomposed.
If the postmortem is conducted when the body is in a fresh condition, the nature of injuries and other information related with the cause of death can be established by forensic scientists, examining and investigating the case.
Mention may be made that the mortuary at JNIMS was opened on April 1 this year.
Since then, postmortem of as many as 63 dead bodies have so far been conducted.
Postmortem of dead bodies transferred by police from Thoubal and Imphal East districts are being conducting postmortem in this morgue.
Official source also said that JNIMS is planning to upgrade the mortuary by installing another cabin which will be able to accomodate 12 dead bodies at a time.
