Imphal, April 26:
Appointment of teachers on contract basis under District Councils of hill districts has been banned by AMSU and DESAM.
Casting aspersions on the motive of the State Government's move to appoint teachers of District Councils of hill districts only for 85 days on contract basis, vice-president of AMSU E Ratankumar and general secretary of DESAM LC Santosh during a press conference today at AMSU HQs said that the initiative is nothing but a ploy to earn some extra money just ahead of the next Assembly elections.
The student leaders appealed to appoint the teachers on regular basis through legal procedures like DPC if the State Government is sincere enough to address the shortage of teachers in schools of hill districts.
They opined that appointment of teachers just for 85 days would be disastrous for both the students and teachers.
The move is just a ploy bereft of any concern for the welfare of students to amass a fortune with their eyes on the coming elections by some State officials and politicians, they alleged.
While appealing to the authority concerned not to dilute the campaign for quality education being undertaken by some student organisations, they noted that the rules and regulations of 1976 followed in the State for recruitment of teachers need to be revised as it has become outdated.
Cautioning that appointment of teachers for only 85 days would breed more problems rather than solving it, AMSU and DESAM also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister today to this effect.
Copies of the memorandum were also presented to the Minister of Education and Commissioner of Education (S), they informed.
If the State Government continues with its appointment process, the two student bodies are all set to launch various forms of agitation, they warned.
Clarifying that AMSU and DESAM have no objection to appointment of teachers in schools of hill districts on permanent basis they however said that the policy of appointing teachers for 85 days would never be allowed, asserted the student leaders.
