The 5th Manipuri National Convention to be attended by around 1500 delegates including Manipuris who have settled outside the State will be held from June 21 to 25 at NCC Ground, Thangmeiband.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh will inaugurate the convention as chief guest and it is being hosted jointly by All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and North East Students' Co-ordinating Committee on Manipuri Integrity (NESCOMMI).
Speaking about the convention during a press meet at AMSU Headquarters here today, DESAM vice president PC Newton informed that all the delegates would gather at the NCC ground on June 21 and on the following day a mass rally would be taken out to get the sacred fire from Kangla with which the Chief Minister would light the torch to formally inaugurate the convention.
Various important issues like the question of identity of Manipuri people, the problem of influx of outsiders, the standard of existing education system, the economic status of Manipuri society and human rights scenario in Manipur would be discussed along with the experts during the convention, he informed.
He also appealed to people belonging to every section of the society to come and participate in the convention.
To ensure smooth organisation of th convention, Newton also appealed to all concerned not to impose any bandh, general strike or blockade from June 21 to 25.In the academic session of the convention to be held on June 22 under the theme of Education, former Vice Chancellor of MU Prof IS Khaidem would be the moderator and former Principal of DM College of Teachers' Education and principal of RK Sana tombi College of Teacher Education Dr S Gyaneshore would be the speakers, Newton disclosed.
He further disclosed human rights situation in Manipur would be the theme of the academic session in the morning on June 23 and it would be attended by senior Citizen Arambam Lokendra as moderator and Babloo Loitongbam of Human Rights Alert and Laitonjam Umakanta of TIPS as speakers.
While in the afternoon session the topic under discussion would be migrants and its consequences.
A Brajakumar would be the moderator and senior lecturers of Imphal College namely P Jashwanta S Noren would be the speakers.
The academic session in the morning of June 24 would discuss the economic status of Manipuri society and its people and the session would be moderated by former Director of College Development Council of Manipuri University Prof N Mohendro, he said, adding that Prof Amar Yumnam and Prof Ch Priyoranjan of Economics Department, MU would be the speakers.
The topic of discussion in the afternoon session would be on the Manipuri national identity with Prof Nabakumar as moderator and Senior Grade Lecturer of Imphal College K Sethajit, social workers Ningthouja Lancha, Rose Mangshi and Makakmayum Islam as speakers, DESAM vice president informed.
