Imphal, May 18 2010: Though the Government of India has dissolved the Medical Council of India (MCI), the state authority is expecting to get the green signal for opening the Jawarharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) by June 15 .

An official source said that information has been received that the MCI had earlier recommended permissibility of the opening of JNIMS, Manipur before the MCI was dissolved.

After the recommendation of the MCI, related papers had reached the Union Ministry of Health.

After discussing the recommendations for permitting opening of new medical institutions/colleges in the country, the Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad would be signing the permissions before June 15, the source said.

The source further said that the target of the Government of Manipur to start the session of the first batch students in the first week of August would be achieved.

As soon as the Health Ministry gives permission to open the JNIMS, admission of the students would begin.

The admission test would be held together with that of RIMS and other medical colleges where the nominees of the state government would be selected.

For this purpose, necessary instructions would be issued to the officials concerned of the Health Department, the source said.

There will be 100 seats at JNIMS.

Even if all the 100 seats can not be filled by students of the state, at least 50 percent of the students would be local.

The rest would be taken from other states as per the rules of the MCI.

The authority of JNIMS is carefully looking into this aspect.

It may be recalled here that MCI teams had come to the state five times to inspect the condition of the JNIMS.

The permission for opening the medical institute would have been received last year.

But as the construction of infrastructure was not completed, it could not be received.

The Government of Manipur has translated into reality whatever demands the MCI team had made during its five visits.

The team members had seen for themselves all that had been done as demanded by them.

It is learnt that the team, after its last visit here, had recommended to the Union Ministry of Health to allow JNIMS to start session.
