Imphal, September 16 2025:
The Porompat Water Supply plant has suspended water distribution to consumers, including JNIMS Hospital, after contaminated water entered its main reservoir due to flooding at its facility, triggered by a breach and overflow of the Iril River's embankment at Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai in Imphal East.
Floodwater levels at Porompat Water Supply complex continued to rise until this evening.
The water supply remains suspended as the infiltrated floodwater in the main reservoir poses a significant risk to public health.
When contacted, officials at the Porompat Water Supply informed The Sangai Express that floodwater began entering the facility the previous morning and infiltrated the main reservoir by midnight.

Stating that water supply will remain suspended until the main reservoir is thoroughly cleaned and refilled with fresh water for treatment, the officials said that water supply to JNIMS Hospital, DDK Imphal complex, Ayangpalli, Soibam Leikai, Checkon, New Checkon, Nongmeibung, Kongpal, Porompat, and Top Khongnangkhong areas will remain suspended for some time.
Meanwhile, efforts to repair the breached embankment of Iril River, which occurred around 2.30 am yesterday were ongoing until late this evening under the supervision of the Water Resources Department and Kshetrigao AC MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan.
The repair of the breached embankment was still incomplete as of 8 pm with approximately 40 feet still to be fixed.
The breach and overflow of Iril River's embankment have caused extensive flooding across areas in Imphal East, including Kshetrigao, Kongpal, Porompat, Soibam Leikai, Thambalkhong, Porompat Thawanthaba, Wangkhei, Kongba, Keikhu, and Khurai, submerging homes, offices, schools, colleges, paddy fields, and fish farms.
Key locations affected include JNIMS Hospital, Imphal East DC Office, District Agricultural Office, SDO/SDC Office, Modem College, Standard College, Directorate of Census Office, SP Office, Lairenpat Power Station, Porompat Water Supply, District Textile Office, and Central Dairy Plant.
Additionally, many paddy fields in Imphal East that were previously unaffected are now inundated.
The repair of Imphal River embankments, breached at three sites in Wabagai AC, remained incomplete until late evening.
