New Delhi, September 12: Rise in the water level of Loktak lake steadily even if the water level of the swollen rivers have started receding has become a cause of alarm for the people settling around the lake.

Most of the major rivers passing through the valley are flowing into the Loktak lake.

Consequently, the water level of the lake has been rising at the rate of 2 feet every day, thereby causing alarm among the people specially the fish farmers.

Over 40 fish farms in Moirangpat under Thanga Assembly Constituency have already been inundated with water overflowing from the riverine of Thangjing hill, more popularly known as Turel Lu following breaching of the embankment.

As a precautionary measures, MLA of the Constituency Tongbram Man- gibabu today distributed sand bags for piling up along the Laisoi Road running through the two Takmu Experimental Fish Farms of the Loktak Maril located next to Moirangpat to prevent flood water.

The MLA also inspected the flood affected areas of Khordak Nongmaikhong where more than 600 fish farms have been devastated with flood water from Khordak Maril.

Along with distribution of sand bags, the MLA also assured the affected fish farmers that he would urge the State Government for extending necessary assistance to them.

Talking to this reporter, some of the aggrieved villagers who were earlier depending on cultivation of their land for sustenance but forced to become fish farmers after their land were submerged in the rising water of the Loktak Project, expressed apprehension that any chances of flood from the rising water of Loktak would further compound their difficulties even as they have not been able to meet both ends from the income of fish farming.

Meanwhile, at the instruction of the DGP, free medical camps have begun from today in flood affected areas of Nambol Assembly Constituency like Nambol Khongkham and Naorem.

A team of three doctors of the Police provided free medical treatment and distributed medicines among the people.

Safe drinking water was also supplied to the people of the area during the medical camp.

The camp would continue tomorrow.
