Lamka, November 02:
Cautioning that its stand should not be taken otherwise or misinterpreted as anti-Manipuri, the Churachandpur District Students Union today declared that Meetei Mayek or language should not be introduced as an academic discipline in the schools of Churachandpur District on any ground whatsoever.
CDSU sees neither logic nor reason in introducing a recently revived and resurrected script like Meetei Mayek, a script which is still Latin & Greek to the majority of the Meitei population as a discipline of learning especially for the students in a hill district like Churachandpur, said a press release signed by K Doukhum, president and Lal Roubul secretary of the student body.
CDSU has also set a week time frame for shopkeepers and mobile phone service retail outlets to remove any hoarding & signboards with Meitei Mayek within the town and the district.
The decision of CDSU comes close on the heels of the decision taken by the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur to ban the script in their area of jurisdiction.
