Providential escape for Chingai AC MLA

Ukhrul, April 30 2013: Chingai Assembly Constituency MLA MK Preshow Shimray had a providential escape as unidentified persons fired and triggered a blast targeted at his convoy near Kuivakazo village today afternoon.

A 10-vehicle convoy including the MLA, ADC Member Horyaola Vashum and security escorts were reportedly returning from Talui (Tolloi) after attending an ADC Handloom Mela when the attack was launched at near Kuivakazo village, which is about 3 kilometres from here.

After spot inquiry of the incident, Officer in-charge of Ukhrul police station P Longpinao told media persons that an IED was exploded by unknown persons, who also fired a shot towards the convoy.

The security escort also fired some rounds in retaliation moments after the blast took off in between the MLA's car and a bullet-proof vehicle following the VIP vehicle, said the OC while informing that the MLA and others who accompanied him are safe.

During an interaction at Ukhrul after the incident, Preshow said he was visiting his hometown to celebrate an anniversary function of his election victory as well as to join the ADC handloom mela at Talui.

Expressing shock over the incident and conveying that the firing lasted for at least 30 minutes, the MLA conveyed gratitude to his security personnel for ensuring his safe arrival to ukhrul.

Meanwhile, sources said that a white bolero Jeep was seen speeding towards Ukhrul after the bomb blast and the exchange of gun fire.

Shortly after clearance from the home minister and chief minister for enhanced security arrangement, he left for Imphal.

It is said that the MLA left Imphal for Ukhrul yesterday.

This is the second time in recent years that an MLA from Ukhrul district has come under attack from militants.

On April 15, 2011, the late MLA from Phungyar Assembly Constituency, Wungnaoshang Keishing was ambushed near New Canaan village under Litan police station.

Though the MLA escaped unhurt, seven security personnel and a civilian driver were killed in the ambush.
