Imphal, February 19:
Peeved with the deplorable condition of IT road and inaction of the State Government, the IT Road Development Committee has threatened to launch an indefinite economic blockade on both National Highways 39 and 53 with effect from midnight of February 24 if the State authority fails to initiate any positive action by the deadline set.
A statement issued by the IT Road Development Committee informed that a resolution to this effect was adopted in a public meeting held at Kangpokpi yesterday with the Kuki Students' Organisation (Sadar Hills) and Zeliangrong Students' Union (Tamei Area).
This decision to launch the economic blockade is compelled by the prolonged negligence of IT road even as the route is serving as the lifeline for the people inhabiting Sadar Hills and Tamenglong district, asserted the statement.
Further it highlighted various woes and miseries of Sadar Hills area and Tamei region citing lack of basic civic amenities including transport infrastructure, medical facilities etc.
Alleging that health centres in these areas serve no purpose as it could not treat even minor ailments, it informed that many people living in these areas have died of malaria and other contagious diseases.
Asserting that these two regions have suffered the longest as compared to other parts of the State, it questioned as to what prevents the State Government from providing basic amenities to these people as are made available in other parts of Manipur.
