Weightlifting referee Elangbam Nandakumar who was on his way to Guwahati for the 57th Men's and 18th Women's National Weightlifting Championship was reportedly crushed to death when the bus he had boarded from Imphal ran over him at Chamukidima near Dimapur at around 7.30 pm yesterday.
Nandakumar (46) was the son-in-law of ex-MP Th Chaoba, and was a resident of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai.
He had boarded the bus (MN04/7476) from Imphal at around 12 noon yesterday along with the players who would be taking part in the championship.
According to report, the unfortunate incident occurred when Nandakumar lighted from the bus to answer nature's call while it was being stopped at an entry check post near Chamukidima.
On seeing the bus speeding away leaving him behind, Nandakumar ran after it tried to jump inside the side door of the bus.
But his trousers got hooked on the railing and he fell under the rear wheel.
The body was brought to RIMS Hospital today where a post-mortem was conducted and handed over to his family members.
Imphal Police Station have registered a case in this connection.
Nandakumar was also a riflemen of the Manipur Rifles and married one of the daughters of ex-MP Th Chaoba.
Body to be disposed off: As no one has come to claim the body of an unidentified youth who was found shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Churachandpur New Bazar near on the night of February 10 it has been handed over to Churachandpur Municipal Council for disposing off with the consent of the District Magistrate concerned.
The body has been laying at the mortuary of Churachandpur District Hospital since retrieving by the police.
