Imphal, September 06:
The 12-hour Thoubal bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death of Ng Ingocha of Ningel after alleged brutal torture by personnel of 37 Assam Rifles concluded peacefully today.
The bandh was supported by various social organisations including Apunba Lup and remained in force from 6 am to 6 pm today.
There was no report of any untoward incident during bandh.
Although some brisk buying and selling activities were seen at the market places of Thoubal, Yairipok and Kakching, there was no vehicular traffic on the road during the bandh.
It may be noted here that the PIB (Defence Wing) had claimed that Ng Ingocha was an activist of UNLF, but the proscribed outfit had denied it.
Ingocha was reportedly picked up by the Assam Rifles personnel along with seven other persons from Moreh Ward No.7 on August 19.Although all the arrested persons were set free the following day due to the pressure from the local meira paibis, Ingocha passed away on August 23.The JAC alleged that Ingocha died due to alleged brutal torture he was subjected to while in the custody of the security personnel.
Later in the evening today, JAC representatives called on the local MLA N Sovakiran at his official quarters here.
During the meeting, the JAC members asserted that Ingocha was an innocent person and he was at Moreh in connection with the business he was carrying on to earn his livelihood.
The MLA also reportedly condemned the killing and said since it was akin to custodial killing, he would brought up the matter to the notice of Chief Minister in-charge Th Devendra for taking up necessary measures.
Later taking to mediapersons, JAC convenor said that a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Minister in-charge tomorrow to press the demand for repealing AFSPA, giving fitting punishment to the guilty AR personnel and providing ex-gratia to the bereaved family members.
