One teacher sustained injuries when police resorted to firing tear gas shells, mockery bombs and water cannon to disperse a large number of agitating school teachers coming to court arrest near the Chief Minister�s bungalow here today.
The aggrieved teachers who have been agitating against the non-payment of salary and arrear also set aflame the effigies of Education Minister Francis Ngajokpa and Commissioner (Education) Ch Jayanta at Sega Road this afternoon.
At around 11.30 am today, agitating teachers, number around 3000 many of whom had come from Kakching and Thoubal area under Zone III marched ahead from Bengali School here to court arrest.
As they approached the Chief Minister�s bungalow, the police used high powered water cannon and fired tear gas canisters and mockery bombs to disperse them.
One Thokchom Jadumani Singh, who works as a teacher in Kamong Langoijam LP School reportedly sustained injuries in the police action.
Even as the confrontation between the police and the agitating teachers was going on near the Chief Minister�s bungalow, a large number of Elementary school teachers set on fire the effigies of Education Minister Francis Ngajokpa and Commissioner (Education) Ch Jayanta at Sega Road in front of the Keishampat Sega Primary School and Junior High School.
With the intention of intensifying the ongoing agitation, the school teachers gathered at Keishampat Junction and prepared for launching various other forms of agitation.
But seeing the security measures taken up by the Govt, they cancelled the plan and converged at Keishampat Sega Primary School and Junior High School to discuss further course of agitation to be taken up.
Accordingly at around 2.30 pm, they came out in front of the school gate and burnt the effigies of the Education Minister and the Edn Commissioner.
