Three AR jawans hurt in bomb attack

Imphal, October 17 2011: At least three personnel of 23 Assam Rifles including a driver sustained injuries when a bomb suspected to have been planted by armed UG cadres went off at a spot along Imphal-Ukhrul Road, around 5 kms to the west of Litan Police Station under Ukhrul district at around 5.40 am today.

The injured AR personnel have been identified as Sudhir (45) s/o Gopal of Kerela; W Mayuinan (25) s/o late Nungshung Mayuinan of Nungshang village under Ukhrul district and Ashini (20) s/o Krishnadeva of Punjab.

Sudhir sustained injuries behind his left ear, W Mayuinan on his head, neck and face and Ashini on his right hand.

All of them are posted in the Litan post of 23 Assam Rifles.

According to information received from Litan Police Station, a convoy of 23 Assam Rifles left their post at around 5.30 am today.

As soon as they crossed Litan at around 5.40, a loud explosion could be heard.

Immediately, the police were alerted and identified that the explosion had taken place near Songkai Kuki village which is under Litan Police Station.

A team of police from Litan Police Station led by its OC rushed to the spot.

Investigation of the area led to the conclusion that the bomb had been fitted at the cliff of a road turning around 7 to 8 feet above the ground.

The AR convoy was coming in four vehicles with a 407 mini Tata truck in front followed by a Gypsy in which their Commander was traveling while another 407 mini Tata truck and a truck trailed behind.

The 407 mini Tata truck, which was leading the convoy bore the impact of the bomb attack and its driver and three personnel who were traveling in the rear sustained injuries.

All the injured have been admitted to RIMS Hospital, Imphal for treatment.

Attending doctors have stated that the condition of the three injured AR personnel is not critical.

Not far from the spot where the bomb exploded is an overgrown area, which the police suspected may have been used for triggering the blast with remote control.

The impact of the blast was so great that the entire wind shields of the 407 mini Tata truck on the front and sides shattered.

The doors were also bore holes made by bomb splinters.

On hearing the report of the bomb attack, DIG of Assam Rifles also came down from Ukhrul for inspection and under his command a massive search operation was conducted.

However, there is no report of any arrest made in connection with the bomb attack.

Police have reportedly recovered some splinters of the bomb from the blast site.

Though no UG group has claimed any responsibility for the attack, police suspected that PLA cadres may be involved since the area falls within the jurisdiction of the banned outfit.
