Many steps recommended for promoting Manipuri language

Imphal, November 15 2010: On the concluding day of the three-day international seminar on Manipuri language today, a pledge was taken to use the latest technology for developing the language.

This was recommended by experts to the Manipur government, the Manipur University authority as well as other influencing authorities.

Other recommendations made in the seminar held at Kangla hall under the aegis of Research Forum Manipur in collaboration with Manipur University, State Art and Culture Department and Education (U) Department included to introduce Manipuri as a compulsory subject for students with Manipuri as the mother tongue from standard-I to graduate level.

Opening of diploma and degree courses for Manipuri studies in Manipur University, IGNOU and universities in Bangladesh will be impressed upon the authorities of the universities as well as the Manipur government.

The Seminar also resolved to press the authority of All India Radio, Imphal to increase its transmission frequency so that Manipuris residing at every nook and corner of the globe can listen to Manipuri programmes, and also for airing of programmes on learning and teaching of Manipuri language.

While drafting the recommendations, the seminar also decided to press the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Manipur government to use high-tech information technology to enhance the convenience of communication through this language.

Pressing the state government to give incentives to candidates sitting for exams with Manipuri as optional subject in competitive exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and Manipur Public Service Commission and to award scholarships to students who opt for Manipuri when the language is not their mother tongue were also other recommendation made in the seminar.

The technical session on the concluding day of the seminar was moderated by former Prajatantra editor, K Modhumangol.

Manipuri speaking people from different parts of the world as countries like Canada, China, Bangladesh and other states of the country like Assam, Tripura, etc.
