Addressing the gathering, Moirangthem Meghachandra, who took out voluntary retirement from serving as Deputy Inspector of Schools to contest in the upcoming 13th State Assembly voiced concern over the frequent arrest of youths under various Acts during the ongoing unrest.
He pointed out that many young people had come forward as volunteers to protect their communities since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023.He further stated that most of these youths acted out of fear and responsibility, and therefore should not be criminalised.
He ensured that if elected, he would raise the issue at the State Assembly and seek protection for such youths under the General Amnesty provision enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
