Imphal, December 15 2010: Along with presentation of State and district level award for the year 2010-11, a youth convention was organised under the aegis of Nehru Yuva Kendra at the meeting of DC office complex at Lamphelpat here today.

Henerita Sukham of Chingamakha Pishum Leirak and Hidangmayum Shamkumar Sharma of Sagolband Tera Sapam Leirak were presented a cash prize of Rs 5000 and a certificate each for the Individual Youth Award for 2010-11 while Lairenkabi Youth Dramatic Union, Kangchup Road was honoured with the Outstanding Youth Club award carrying Rs 10,000 in cash a certificate.

For the State level award, Leimapokpam Chanu Nganbileima of Keinou Phura Makhong, Bishnupur district and Naorem Surchandra Singh of Tentha Heibung, Thoubal district were respectively awarded a cash reward of Rs 15,000 and for the Individual Youth Award.

The award for Outstanding Youth Club Award at the State level was given to Rural Development Association, Irong Khunou, Thoubal district.

The award carries a cash reward of Rs 25,000 and a certificate of honour.

The awards were presented to selected individual youth and clubs in recognition of their outstanding contribution in the field of social service, health care, education, vocational and environment.

Sports materials were also distributed among 78 clubs from various districts at the occasion.

Joint Director of Education Department, Govt ment of Manipur G Anita, Zonal Director of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Jackie Ruivah and Pradhan of Mayang Langing GP Tompok Meitei attended the inaugural function of the convention as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Delivering the key note address of the convention, District youth Co-ordinator, NYK Y Laksman Singh highlighted the problems of youths and the role that NYK has been taking up in resolving these problems.

He said that youth are the human resource for development and key agents for social change.

In recognition of this fact, NYK has been serving the youth, specially those in rural areas all across the country, for their physical growth and intellectual development for the last 38 years.

Empowering the youth with a sense of responsibility and services to the society is an important aspect of NYK.

He further informed that NYK has also been serving the non-student rural youth of India through a number of programmes and activities.

The activities of NYK which are being implemented through local youth clubs and Manila Mandals include leadership and personality development training, skill upgradation, awareness generation on health, environment & disaster management, sports, adventure programmes and promotion of folk culture, he explained.

In order to help and guide NYK in the implementation of its plans and for better co-ordination with other Government Departments and agencies, District Level Advisory Committees on youth programmes consisting of 20 members including five non-official members have been formed and regular meeting held with the DC concerned of the district who is the chairman of the said Advisory Committee.

He observed that lack of motivation, spirit of voluntarism and role model among the youth have become a serious concern of the society today.
