Congress conference held under strict security protection

Imphal, December 08 2010:
MPCC president, Gaikhangam was today prevented from entering Noney area in Tamenglong district by villagers who were boycotting him.
However, he entered forcibly by deploying additional security forces from Imphal.
Villagers blocked him from entering the area to attend a conference of Congress Workers.
Earlier no disturbance was given to him when he inaugurated a community hall, Longmai Community Hall.
Gaikhangam inaugurated the community hall around 8 am without any disturbances amidst the boycott called by the Longmai Village Authority, Nungba Sub-division.
The inaugural ceremony was also well attended.
Protest against him surfaced all of a sudden when Gaikhangam along with his party workers proceeded to Noney Bazar to attend the Congress Workers' Conference.
Around 200 women suddenly appeared on the way to the venue of the conference and blocked his entry.
While blocking him, they shouted various slogans like "Stop corruption", "We oppose Gaikhangam's visit", "We boycott Gaikhangam", "Pay out land compensation", "Pay out wages of NREGS workers", etc.
A heated exchange of words erupted when supporters of Gaikhangam tried to break the restriction imposed on the MPCC president.
Gaikhangam had to remain seated inside his car for about an hour till the chaotic situation subsided when a police commando team from Imphal arrived to bring the crowd under control.
The police commandos dispersed the women blocking the road to make way for Gaikhangam to cross the blockade.
Later, Gaikhangam said that he had entered the area only after an understanding was brought about.
He also termed the incident as unfortunate while speaking at the Congress Workers' Conference attended by hundreds of congress workers.
Congress is a party working for the development of the country.
For development to take place prevalence of peace and co-existence of people of all sections of the society is a must he said and appealed to all to come forward and work for peace and harmony in the state.
Asserting that during the Congress rule, various revolutionary works have been brought about in the developmental front, he said adding that many development programmes are also being planned to be taken up.
A total revolution of the living standards of the people could only be brought by the Congress.
Reiterating that the elections to eight municipal councils and 18 nagar panchayats across the state will be held on January 3 next year, he said that a meeting of the party scheduled toGaikhangam face protests at Noney be held tomorrow will discuss the matter of fielding party candidates.
The meeting will attempt to finalise the names of the candidates to be fielded in the election.
Chairman of Sadar Hill District Council, Seibu and chairman of Tamenglong ADC G Soihem Haomei who attended the conference also talked on the achievements of Congress.
