Imphal, February 10 2026:
A team representing the Wheelchair Basketball Association Manipur (WBAM) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand with an appeal for a separate department for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
The memorandum also sought infrastructure and financial support and policy measures for wheelchair basketball and disability sports in Manipur.
Highlighting the severe hardships faced by wheelchair basketball players, the memorandum has urged the Chief Minister to construct a dedicated indoor stadium for PwDs so that they may practice and participate in sports with dignity and safety; provide grants and financial assistance to WBAM similar to the grants provided to football clubs and other sports associations in Manipur; establish a separate department for PwDs in Manipur like the ones that exist in States such as Assam; ensure that the Grant-in-Aid provided by the Social Welfare Department for skill training, which is currently stalled for several years, is released regularly and extended to NGOs/organisations run by PwDs; allocate a separate budget under Youth Affairs & Sports Department for organising annual State-level tournaments for disability sports and ensure full and effective implementation of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 in Manipur.
