Seminar on usage of Agrotextiles held

Imphal, October 29 2013: One day seminar on usage of "Agrotextiles Suitable for Manipur State and its Advantages" under the scheme on promoting usage of agrotextiles in NE region was jointly organised by O/o Textile Commissioner, Govt of India, COE Agrotech SASMIRA, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre Imphal and Govt of Manipur at The Classic Hotel Imphal today.

The inaugural function was attended by JC Ramthanga, IAS, Commissioner, Dept of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Govt of Manipur.

Speaking as the chief guest, he emphasised on working in collaboration within different Government departments and promoting the usage of agrotextiles.

He informed that the use of agrotextile is being known to this region and practised by few progressive farmers.

The awareness is however, still at nascent stage and he welcomed the initiatives of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for implementing a scheme for promoting the usage of agrotextile in NER region.

Delivering the welcome speech, Dr N Prakash, Joint Director ICAR Research Manipur who was the president of the function, mentioned the scope and benefits of usage of agrotextiles in NE India specially in Manipur.

Dr Manisha Mathur, Asst Director, SASMIRA, Mumbai, in her concept address mentioned about the assistance which could be provided to the farmers and other agri-entrepreneurs.

Director, Dept of Horticulture and Soil conservation, the guest of honour of the seminar, also emphasised on maximum use of agritextile products in agriculture and other agri-related fields.

More than 150 participants including framers, academicians and Agricultural scientists attended the Seminar.

Complete information about Agrotextiles and its applied advantages in Agricultural and Horticultural field were explained and discussed by different resource persons including the advantages of usage of agrotextiles, scheme of Ministry of Textiles for Promotion of Usage of Agrotextile in NER region, manufacturing of agrotextile products, etc.

Farmers have shown keen interest towards learning and adopting this new technology.

Hopefully such initiatives will provide necessary support to the North Eastern States and bring them on a par with other progressive states like Gujarat, Punjab and Maharashtra etc and that will together help realise the dream of a richer Indian, a brighter and ultimate India, a statement said.
