The game of Polo has a great potential for acting as catalyst in encouraging sports tourism in the state, Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat opined today while speaking as chief guest at the closing function of the XX Governor's Cup Invitation Polo tournament 2010 at Pologround here.
He said that the game of polo can become a big attraction for tourists to come to Manipur and this will boost up the economy of the people of the state.
"I am hopeful that state government will continue support the activities of polo associations and take up necessary steps to promote the game of Polo, which is the cultural heritage of Manipur".
The youth of the state are very much suited to this game as also by vitue of their agility and temperament, the Governor observed stressing the need for efforting for the development of polo and preservation of the Manipuri pony.
He also lauded and encourage the efforts of the organisations and associations particularly the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association established in 1977 with the objective of promoting the game.
Before the closing ceremony of the tournament, the final match for the trophy played between the Manipur Police Sports Club (MPSC) and Khurai Polo Club (B).
The former beat the latter by 9-6 goals and lifted this trophy of the Governor's cup containing a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and the trophy.
The runner's up trophy consisted of Rs 7000.The best player award with cash award of Rs 5000 was won by Th mocha of Khurai while the best polo pony award went to HAWK owner M Jawan of MPSC(A).
