Police today resorted in firing tear gas shells to disperse a group of protestors taking out a rally at Nambol demanding production of a student leader missing since picked up by suspected security men in civil dress from his home on the night of February 17.During the firing of tear gas shells, a woman protestor fainted.
A JAC has been formed in connection with the disappearance of 33-year old Sairom Robindro of Kha Jiri under Nambol police station, former president of the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Bishnupur district and threatened to impose statewide general strike if police failed to trace out his whereabouts by 4 pm of tomorrow.
Whereabouts of Robindro remained unknown since he was picked up by suspected security men speaking Hindi and in civil dress from his home on Thursday night, at about 8 pm.
Residents of Kha-Jiri suspected the unknown persons to be personnel of the 12 Maratha Light Infantry.camping at Nambol Maiba Lokpa Ching located hardly one kilometer away from the Nambol police station.
But the Army authority at the camp denied involvement of their personnel when locals enquire about it yesterday.
A public meeting was held at Nambol Kha Jiri Maning Leikai with regard to the disappearance of Robindro and formed a JAC.
The meeting resolved to launch agitations if police failed to trace out his whereabouts.
Later, at about 11.30 am, a slogan shouting rally was marched on the street at Nambol demanding immediate release of Robindro.
The rally marched towards the Nambol police station which was stopped by the police at Nambol Chingthang from further proceeding.
To control the protestors, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and rubber bullets.
A woman taking part in the rally fainted on hearing the firing sounds.
Former Union minister, Th Chaoba who arrived at the spot at that point of time brought the protestors to the negotiating table.
Later, the protestors called on with the SP, Bishnupur district.
Mention may be made that Robindro was picked by the suspected security men foxing her mother who tried to prevent them in taking away on that fateful night.
"When I asked who they (who hide their faces) are and why to take away my son, they assured of sending back him after a talk on certain matter but fail to leave him after they taken him upto the gate".
She also charged the unknown armed group of vandalizing her house before leaving the place.
