Imphal, May 19:
Taking serious note of digging along river bank from Chongtham Kona to Mutum Phibou under Wangoi A/C to fill up and elevate the adjacent road, the IFCD will be asking the PWD Chief Engineer to stop excavation along the river bank.
MLA Salam Joy of Wangoi A/C accompanied by IFCD officials inspected the deteriorated condition of the Imphal river bank within the Assembly segment today.
Observing excavation of earth from the river bank to pave and elevate road, the IFCD officials maintained that earth for making and developing roads should be taken from hills or quarries instead of digging river banks.
They noted that earth filling work should be done after taking into consideration of the highest flood level.
As the river bank is still wide enough, there is no risk for flood due to break down of river bank, assured the IFCD officials while clarifying that the Department was not informed about excavation at the river bank.
The team led by Salam Joy also inspected the flood prone areas of Samurou Awang Leikai, Imphal Barrage, Iram Siphai and Mutum Phibou.
The IFCD officials also assured that necessary measures will be initiated at spots where the river bank may cave in and where the water may leak through.
