Imphal, October 10 2009:
Health Minister Ph Parijat said that the chaotic situation of the state has caused the increase in the number of psychiatric patients.
This has necessitated setting up of a mental hospital in the state.
He was speaking at the observance function of the World Mental Health Day, 2009 at Rup Mahal Theatre here today.
The programme with the theme 'Mental Health in Primary Care: Enhancing Treatment and Promoting Mental Health,' was jointly organised by the Health Department, Manipur State Mental Health Authority, and All Manipur Nupi Marup.
The Health Minister further observed that the observance of World Mental Health day gains significance in the state.
The people have to know the symptoms of mental illness.
He said the lack of psychiatrists in the state has given burden to the abysmally low number of psychiatrists.

He further stressed on the need to set up district hospitals in Imphal East and West as the JN Hospital will be converted into a medical college.
Parijat said health awareness programme and medical camp under the National Rural Health Mission has been conducted in hill areas.
The occasion was graced by the Health Minister, Ph Parijat as the chief guest.
Vice-president of All Manipur Nupi Marup, T Ibemhal and Director of Health Services, Dr W Motilal and HOD of department of Clinical Psychology, RIMS' Prof M Akshyakumar graced the function as the president and guests of honour.
Head of the Psychiatric department of JN Hospital, Dr L Surchandra, Head of Psychiatry department of RIMS, Prof N Heramani and Associate Professor of RIMS Dr RK Lenin have also spoke on the occasion.
All experts and dignitaries who spoke today held the chaos in the state responsible for the swelling up of psychiatric patients.Doctors and psychiatrists noted that sense of trepidation griped the minds of every person.
The sound of vehicle passing by has also become a matter of fear and apprehension.
The falling of dusk is even feared.
They observed that these have caused the increase in the number of psychiatric patients in the state.
They felt that the need to diagnose the infirmity at the early stage.
They further noted that setting up of a mental hospital will facilitate the early diagnosis of the illness.
Similar programme was also held today at the Conference Hall of Shija Hospital, Langol.
A paper reading competition on mental health by students of Shija Institute of Nursing was the main highlight of the function.
The programme was graced by Dr Palin, Managing Director of SHRI as the chief guest.
