Imphal, October 30 2008:
In connection with the monetary demand of the proscribed PREPAK, all the pharmacies of Imphal town including those located at the southern gate of RIMS have shut up.
The decision to close down drug stores came after two unidentified persons placed two live bullets at the Lamphel Pharmacy located near the southern gate of RIMS.
Following the threat, all the pharmacies under Manipur Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA) put down their shutters today.
However, pharmacies located behind the RIMS Gynaecology ward just beyond the RIMS compound wall and those located near JN Hospital continued their business as usual.
According to sources, most of the pharmacies which put down their shutters belong to retailers/stockists.
Efforts to contact MCDA representatives on the matter proved futile till the time of filing this report.
Consequent upon the same threat, a large number of chemists staged a protest sitting at RIMS South gate yesterday.
Similar protest sitting was also staged today at the same venue.
On the other hand, local Meira Paibis staged a sit-in-protest at Yumnam Leikai Yumjao Lairembi ground today against placing a bomb by some unidentified persons at the residence of Yumnam Mohendro yesterday.
Mohendro is an Executive Engineer of the IFCD.
According to family members, some unidentified persons came to the Yumnam Leikai residence of the EE a few days back and demanded contract work for Dolaithabi Project.
