Security measures for Republic Day celebrations

Imphal, January 24 2009:
A total 888 security men from the state security sets up have been ordered to take post where they have been assigned by 2 pm tomorrow (January 25), a day ahead as security in Manipur's capital Imphal has been further tightened ahead of the country's Republic Day Monday.
Seven platoons of CRPF extracted from the CRPF group centre, Langjing including two platoons of women personnel have also called out to assist the state security forces, official said Saturday.
On the other hand, government is also all set for the celebration of the day in Imphal which state Governor, Gurbachan Jagat will attend as chief guest at a function to be held at the 1st Manipur Rifles ground.
Before, he will also receive the salute of the march-pass contingents at Kangla fort.
The already tighten security in Imphal will be further tighten up from a day ahead of the celebration function as government has chalked out Republic Day security deployment arrangement in Imphal with Inspector General of Police, law and order-1 as the overall in-charge.
He will be assisted by senior SP, L Kailun of Imphal west and SP, Imphal east Th Radeshyam.
A total of 888 security men (including women police personnel) including 70 reserve mobiles has been kept reserved for deployment in Imphal city area for smooth celebration of the day on Monday.
An additional seven platoons of CRPF including two women platoon has also called out from the CRPF group centre, Langjing, Imphal.
Fire tender, one barun van two squads of bomb detection and disposal personnel, around 200 anti-riots with five striking forces have also put ready.
12 executive magistrates will also be on duty on the day.
Official said the special security arrangement has been made considering the law and order situation in which there is possibility of carrying out destructive activities by the militants in connection with the boycott of the day called by them and thwart infiltration of them (militants) in the city area and disturb the celebration of the day.
There is no specific information of militants plan to carry out destructive activities to disturb the celebration the officer who did not want to name as he is not allow to disclose to media said adding that the city has been divided into 10 zones from the security points of view and security deployment will take place from 2 pm in 31 main city areas including the roads leading to the city, top of the buildings and other vital installations.
Security in Manipur specially in greater Imphal area have already tighten up well ahead of the Day following instructions from Union ministry of home affairs in the last week of this current month.
The above security arrangement is above the round the clock security coverage to have vigilant on the movement of militants with night policing has been conducting since then.
Police securities vigilant are also assisted by the Manipur Rifles and IRB.
Apart from 25 mobile teams including quick response team are patrolling round the greater Imphal area, IRB personnel have been detailed round the clock at 45 sensitive points and main roads leading to the Imphal city.
The IRB have started detailing from last week and will duty at these points till Republic Day, officials said.
Five QRT (Quick Response Team), 12 security check posts, seven mobile parties, 23 motor bike IRB/commandos/city police team are no duty round the clock as day and night policing service in the Bazar area, the source said.
Movement of traffic and party area in and around chief minister secretariat, Manipur secretariat, Assembly secretariat and Raj Bhavan Complex are on strict vigil in the wake of Republic Day, it added.
Checking and frisking to all kinds of vehicles entering the city have been intensified to prevent infiltration of militants in the city.
Meanwhile, after the full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade was held in Imphal Friday with the participation of 40 march-pass contingents, the state is all set to celebrate the day with a grand function in the capital with Governor as chief guest.
An official of the state information department said, erection of gates at various places will start from tonight with security deployment.
In Manipur, militants have been boycotting the Indian Republic Day Celebration every year since the last around 20 years by imposing general strike across the state.
At some instances they had also carried out attack and ambush to the security forces with the approaching of the day.
