Imphal, October 18 2008:
One Nongthonbam Achou (51) of Thoubal Leishangthem, working as a cleaner in Sree Sree Govindajee temple, was killed as he fell down from a tamarind tree this morning.
Achou ascended the tree to pluck tamarind fruits for a feast at the Govindajee temple.
Following complaints from the family of the deceased that the unfortunate incident occurred because Shanglakpa of Govindajee temple Hidangmayum Naba (71) of Thoubal Kiyam Siphai forced Achou to climb up the tamarind tree, Porompat Police have registered an FIR case.
According to Achou's son, Shyamjai (23) who also works at the temple as a caterer, his father first refused to climb the tree.
But Shanglakpa Naba insisted and dragged his father by the hand to the tamarind tree.
The height of the tree from where Achou fell down might be about 20 feet.
Yesterday morning too, Naba reportedly asked Shyamjai to climb up and pluck the tamarind fruits but Shyamjai refused.
He said that his father was not a physically strong person.
Even as complaints were lodged with the police picket stationed at the main gate of the temple, they asked him to take the body home instead of listening to his complaint, Shyamjai said.
Accordingly, he took the corpse home but it was again brought to RIMS where post mortem examination was conducted.
Later the corpse was taken home at Thoubal Leishangthem Khong Manung Mayai Leikai for the last rites.
