Security beefed up ahead of HM visit

Imphal, May 08 2011: Security forces in Imphal and Ukhrul have been put on alert in connection with the proposed two day visit of Union Home Minister P Chi-dambaram in the state.

According to a tentative programme provided by the MHA to the Manipur government, P Chidambaram is arriving in the evening of May 10 around 6 pm.

Sambhu Singh, Joint Secretary, Home, NE in-charge and RN Rabi, Special Director of Intelligence Bureau, will also be part of the team, official sources said.

On the first day of his arrival, Chidambaram will hold meetings with the Governor and Chief Minister.

On the next day, the Home Minister will pay a visit to Ukhrul district where he will inaugurate the mini secretariat building.

It will be followed by a public meeting wherein the UNC is planning to submit a memorandum.

The United Naga Council (UNC) is understood to have prepared to submit a memorandum to the visiting Home Minister, a highly reliable source said.

It added that the memorandum to be submitted was related with its demand for an alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur which the UNC has been demanding after they arbitarily proclaimed they had severed all ties with the Government of Manipur.

Meanwhile, on receipt of the intimation of the Home Minister's visit, the state Home Department has asked the police as well as other security establishments including central forces to take up security measures ahead of the scheduled visit.

State intelligence was reportedly trying to point out places along the stretch of the Imphal-Ukhrul road where special attention are needed to be paid if the Home Minister has to travel by-road to visit Ukhrul district headquarters, depending on weather conditions.

Whether the Home Minister be airlifted or proceed by-road would be depend on weather conditions.

The state government is arranging both arrangements, another highly reliable source said.

The Home Minister is also planning to hold an interaction with public leaders at Imphal Raj Bhavan before concluding his two day visit in the state.

He is scheduled to leave Imphal by a special aircraft of the MHA in the evening of May 11, the source said quoting the tentative scheduled.
