The first Principal Engineer of Manipur Yambem Tombi Singh passed away today at around 5.30 am at Shija Hospital following a heart attack.
He was 91 years old.
Yambem Tombi was selected to study Engineering at Vishewaria Engineering College, Mysore during the British period.
He completed his graduation in 1946 becoming the first graduate in Civil Engineering in Manipur.
He started his service as State Engineer in the erstwhile princely State of Manipur and went on to become the Principal Engineering Officer (PEO) of the then Territorial Council of Manipur.
Tombi later joined PWD and contributed immensely in the survey work of major Inter-district roads and the National Highway 53 as well as major buildings in Manipur.
After successful service career, he retired as Chief Engineer in 1980 .
However, call for duty made him as to come out of retirement and served as Chief Engineer of PDA.
