In pursuance of their various demands, members of All Manipur Municipal Council and nagar Panchayat Joint Action Committee took out a rally at Imphal today and later submitted a memorandum to Governor Dr SS Sidhu.
Participated by all the councillors of the 18 Nagar Panchayats and chairpersons, vice chairpersons and councillors of 8 Municipal Councils, the rally was flagged off from Keishampat.
At Khoyathong Traffic Island, the rallyists were stopped by the police from proceeding further.
However, three representatives of the JAC were allowed to go and submit the memorandum to the Governor.
Later talking to media-persons, one of the representatives of the JAC informed that though the memorandum had been submitted, they could not have an audience with the Governor as the latter was out of station.
Nonetheless, the Secretary to the Governor assured that the demands of the JAC would be discussed within August 30.The demands of the JAC highlighted in the memorandum include implementation of the 12th schedule of the Indian Constitution, entrusting the functions of the PDS to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), providing 10 percent of the Plan amount of the Government departments to the ULBs, appointment of the required staffs of the Nagar Panchayats and payment of salary regular and increasing the honorarium amounts of councillors, chairpersons and vice chairpersons.
