Chennai, February 11, 2010: The 20th district conference of Rotary International District 3240, which would go on for two days, has been inaugurated at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS here today.

Around 700 delegates from 54 Rotary Clubs including four each from USA, Germany and Nigeria are participating at the conference being organised by Rotary Club, Imphal.

The inaugural function of the conference was attended by nominee president of Rotary International 2011-2012 Kalyam Banerjee as chief guest and president of Rotary Club, Imphal Dr Ksh Chourjit as functional president.

Director of RIMS Dr L Fimate, representative president of Rotary International GK Thakral, district governor of Rotary International Ajit Irom and chairman of organising committee, 20th District Conference, 2010 Dr S Rajendra were also present at the occasion as guests of honour.

Speaking at the occasion, Kalyam Banerjee observed that organising an event like the 20th Rotary International District Conference in such a culturally rich State like Manipur is most suitable.

Pointing out that eradication of Polio virus from the surface of the world is one objective that every Rotarian have committed to, Banerjee said India is yet to be recognised as a Polio-free country as the virus responsible for causing Polio is still present in some States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

GK Thakral explained that the aim and objective of Rotary Club is to produce more and more efficient and committed Rotarian leaders right from the grassroots to the top level so as to help in implementation of the plan and programmes of the organisation.

Ajit Irom called for collective participation in eradicating Polio.

Dr L Fimate expressed happiness over the privilege of hosting the event at the jubilee hall of RIMS and described RIMS as not just a premier medical institute in the North east region but also place of cultural integration.

Souvenir and district booklet were also released to mark the occasion.

On the first day of the conference today, separate discussion sessions on Polio Plus, International services, the Rotary foundation and Community services were held.

On the second and the last day of the conference today, similar discussion sessions would continued on various topics like �Club service, Rotary family', �Vocation service serving heart',� USD 200 Million challenge: one hike, one goal for a Polio free world', �Group study exchange ', �Vocational service of Rotary is an occasional service' and �District affairs'.
