Governor opens diabetes conference

Imphal, November 12 2011: The 16th annual conference of the North Eastern Diabetes Society (NEDS) was opened today at RIMS Jubilee Hall by Governor Gurbachan Jagat.

The opening function of the two-day conference was graced by Governor Gurbachan Jagat, NEDS president Th Biren and Health Director Dr S Ibomcha as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

After the annual conference was opened, a souvenir about the annual conference was released by the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Gurbachan Jagat stated health is an essential pre-requisite for development of all aspects of human life.

Even as many diseases have been prevented, controlled or cured, yet many more have emerged.

Yet medical professionals need to upgrade and update their knowledge and skills continuously.

The main objective of the conference was to seek measures to prevent diabetes mellitus by propagating more and more scientific information and creating awareness regarding change of life style causing obesity and diabetes.

The North Eastern Diabetes Society which has its headquarters at Guwahati was established in 1995 covering all the North Eastern States.

The Governor exuded that the ongoing conference would go a long way in achieving the aims and objectives of the society.

The global burden for type 2 diabetes mellitus for 2010 was 285 million people and it was projected to increase to 438 million people in 2030, a 65 per cent increase.

For India, this increase was estimated to be 58 per cent from 51 million people in 2010 to 87 million people in 2030 .

Observing that the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus may be considered as a life long disease, Gurbachan noted that the disease and its complications caused a heavy economic burden for the diabetic patients themselves, their families and society.

A better understanding about the cause of predisposition of Indians to get type 2 diabetes mellitus is necessary for future planning of healthcare, policy and delivery in order to ensure that burdens of the disease are addressed, the Governor added.
