Imphal, November 07 2010: Government proposed naming of three newly constructed three multi-storey women's market-sheds as Nupi (Women) Market has received a strong objection from over 10 civil organisations including women's organisations.

Suggesting that it would be more appropriate to name it as Ema (Mother) Market, they said that government should not take a hasty decision in naming the market places menat only for women.

Addressing a press conference today at Manipur Press Club, Major Khul, general secretary of All Manipur Women Reformation and Development Samaj, Thokchom Ramani opined that government should have invited people's opinions before giving a name to the new market-sheds likely to inaugurated soon.

She appealed to the government to reconsider the naming of the market as Nupi Market suggesting that it will be more appropriate naming it as "Ema Market".

She expressed that future concerns and impacts should be taken into consideration.

It will be wise for the government to think twice before taking a decision in giving a name to the three newly constructed market-sheds.

Government should have consulted with intellectuals and others before taking a decision in this regard, she said.

Observing that the market-sheds are meant only for women vendors, she asserted the occupants are all elderly women.

No young girl and young women sell goods here.

But by Nupi, it will cover women of all ages while Ema usually means elderly women, she said.

President of the Ching-tam Chaokhat Thourang Lup, RK Tharaksana who also took part in the press conference suggested that the idol of at the Khwairamband .

Keithel should be replaced by an idol of Keithel Lairembi worhshipped by the women vendors. MEELAL president Naudalenkhomba also suggested to the government to consider twice before naming the market-sheds so as to avoid any future controversy.

If government fails to do so protests will arise, he warned.

FRIEND advisor, Kulla observed that before giving the market a name, it is needed to look at the legal, cultural and economical points of view while its general secretary Joy Chingkham extended support to the purpose naming of it as Ema Market.

The press conference was also attended by representatives of Kanglei Chanu Chaokhat Lup, All Manipur Students' Guardian Organisation, Kanglei Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, International Peace and Social Advancement, Young Horizon, etc.

Mention may be made that government is planning to inaugurate the new market-sheds on Sonia Gandhi's visit in the state of which the date is not yet confirmed.

Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh has hinted she will arrive on November 12.But there were no official intimation from the Centre about her visit, according to a government source.

However, preparations for her visit are going on full swing.

State PWD handling the construction of the new constructed multi-storey marketing-sheds has completed its work.

Home department has chalked out a plan for deployment of 5000 security personnel to the places where the Congress Supremo is at tour during her visit in the state.
