Imphal, Aug 25:
It's another year of near calamity occurred in the hill areas particularly in Tamenglong district with paddy plants withering due to the scarcity of rainfall.
Farmers in Tamenglong district feel panicky since there has been no rainfall in the last two months or so except scanty drizzle few days ago.
In Tamei sub division farmers rued that damage had been already done as paddy plants had started withering for want of water.
Flowerings of paddy in jhumming fields have already started but the absence of rainfall had played spoil-sports.
The greenish paddy fields have started to turn greyish and even if rains fall at the moment, farmers are destined to have poor harvest this year, according to the people in the Tamei sub division.
The terrace cultivation/wet cultivation too will face the same fate as that of the jhum type as dry weather still prevails.
If rains do not come in the next two weeks in the area then there may not be any hesitation to declare the Tamei subdivision as a natural calamity affected area, quipped a social worker from the area.
