URF pins hope on UN

Imphal, October 21 2013: The armed outfit URF has categorically stated that only UN intervention can bring a solution to the India-Manipur conflict.

A statement issued by the outfit's information and publicity secretary Sanajaoba Meitei on the occasion of the United Nations Day (October 24) asserted that people of Manipur need to understand the functions and activities of UN thoroughly.

So far, more than 150 countries have ratified different UN charters.

Of the many charters, the one which guarantees right to self determination to all colonised people is of utmost importance to the people of Manipur.

Even as armed liberation movements have been going on for decades in Manipur, Nagaland, Kashmir, Tripura and Assam, the Government of India has been projecting these movements in wrong light even after ratifying the UN Covenant 25 .

Before 1949, India did not occupy Manipur nor did Manipur colonise India.

No Indian emperor or king ever conquered Manipur in its long history.

In the post Second World War period, 144 countries have been de-colonised with active support of the UN.

It was on October 12, 1970 when the armed liberation movements in Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Assam were taking giant strides that the UN adopted its crucial resolution 2621 (XXV) .

The resolution clearly laid down that perpetuation of colonial rule in any part of the world is against the UN principles and charters.

It also said that colonial peoples have the inherent right to struggle by all necessary means at their disposal against colonial powers.

Further, the same resolution stated that all UN members countries should extend all possible assistance in the struggle for self determination by colonial people.

However, the Government of India has been ignoring all these principles and resolutions for the past many decades.

Nonetheless, the UN intervention is crucial in Manipur's struggle for self determination, Sanajaoba reiterated.
