Directors cry foul over festival rules

Imphal, April 15: Director of Elite Group of Performing Artists S Indrakumar Singh and Director of Banian Theatre Repertory MC Thoiba have expressed reservation against the criteria and the mode of selection laid down for the Manipur Theatre Today, a drama festival slated to be organised by Department of Art and Culture from May 3.Addressing a press conference in this regard at Manipur Press Club here today, the two threatre directors asserted that the criteria laid down for the participating director of having directed ten plays successfully without defining the time period is meaningless.

Moreover, selection of a play either directed or produced a person who is himself a member in the selection committee is ridiculous.

Inclusion of a threatre director who himself aspires to take part in the festival or any of his close relatives in thre selection committee is not a healthy trend, they noted.

The two theatre directors further observed that in order promote theatre activities in Manipur, the plays to be selected should have quality and the some renowned person from threatrical background should be included in the selection committee along with modifying the criteria so as to give no room for corruption.
