One trooper of Assam Rifles was killed and another wounded in a firing which occurred early morning today at Sandung Khomba Maring village in Imphal East District under Yairipok police station.
A source from the Assam Rifles simply said that the firing erupted when troops of 28 Assam Rifles entered the area to apprehend underground activists, but a highly reliable source said that there was a cross firing between the security force which erupted out of misunderstanding.
Rifleman (no.28561689) Bishwanath Kasav (32) son of Bikari Kasav of Ranchi, Jharkhandand rifleman (no.2851018) Ramsing (41) sustained bullet injuries.
Bishwanath succumbed to multiple bullet injuries on way to RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
Ramsing, admitted at the RIMS Hospital, was operated upon and bullet was extracted from his left side buttock.
His condition was stated to be out of danger, hospital sources said.
Reports said that the incident occurred when troops of 28 Assam Rifles station at Canchipur and at Andro entered the area to launch a counter insurgency operation based on specific information that militants were lodged in the area with intentions to carry out anti-social activities.
When the AR troops arrived, underground cadres opened fire which was instantly returned.
The two riflemen sustained bullet injuries in the firing, sources said.
On the other hand, a police source said that there was no encounter with underground cadres but a cross firing erupted out of misunderstanding among the security forces entering the area from different directions.
On the other hand, Imphal east police commandos led by its additional SP today conducted a search operation at Thumbuthong, Brahmapur Aribam Leikai and Nahabam.
During the operation around 500 people of ages ranging from 15 to 50 years, were called out from their houses and rented rooms to be verified.
One surrendered underground activist, and 38 persons were picked up by the police, the report said.
Meanwhile, militants botched an attack at a house of an individual in Thoubal district with a lathode bomb at about 5.30 am today.
Police said that a lathode bomb was recovered from the house of one Adhikarimayum Borthakur of Samaram village under Thoubal district police.
