Leaders' meet set Feb 9 deadline to Government

Imphal, January 29, 2011: Along with adopting five resolutions unanimously, a leaders' meet convened by the JAC against the brutal killing of Dr N Kunjabihari Singh, Chairman, BOSE, Manipur at MDU Hall here today has set February 9 as the deadline to the State Government to come out with a definite stand on the issue.

Attended by leaders of various civil organisations, the leaders' meet unanimously resolved to full support to the JAC in launching intense agitations if the Government fails to meet the demand within the set deadline.

Among others, the meet further resolved to relax the restriction impose on Board of Secondary Education, Manipur after February 1, a day after the Shradha of Dr Kunjabihari is performed.

Earlier addressing the leaders' meet, social worker Iboyaima Khuman observed that JACs in Manipur should be firmed and see that the movement being spearheaded is successful.

Otherwise, what would be the purpose of constituting a JAC if the issue can be suppressed by the Government with offering lakhs of rupees.

There have also been many instances in which the victim's family settled the issue with the Government leaving the JAC in the lurch, he pointed.

Former Member of Manipur Human Rights Commission RK Rajendro described late Dr N Kunjabihari as a simple man but an important personality and wondered why such an individual has been eliminated.

The claim of MDF over the assassination needs to be elaborated.

Public wants to know exactly why a person like Dr Kunjamohan was assassinated.

It would be unfortunate if the claim have been made to prevent demand for investigation into the killing, he said, adding that the service of an agency like the National Investigative Agency for investigation and we should not keep quiet over the issue.Decrying the conduct of the Government in handling such issues, Rajendro asserted that most of the cases over unexplained killings have been buried by the Government in Manipur where one can different types of killing, either in the hands of Government-UG combined force or Army-UG combined force or UG impostors or in the hands of Commandos disguising as UGs.

The number of dharnas staged over such killings is uncountable in Manipur today.

But killings would continue as long as there is corruption, Rajendro said, while exhorting the gathering for collective efforts toward ensuring the success of any human rights issue.

International human rights norms are being violated blatantly in Manipur, he lamented.

Working president of Manipur Peace Community Prof L Sanadana observed that the objective of education is to develop human resources and development of roads and bridges.

Killing of an educationist in his own office chamber is violence of the culture of education.

How serious is the crime of Dr Kunjabihari that he has to met such a fate ?, he questioned.

He proposed that the case should be handed over to NIA for investigation and identification of the killers.

This would only help in unveiling the mystery behind the killing.

The president of Senior Citizen for Society N Binoy was also among those who spoke at the occasion.
