Imphal, October 27: Commerce and Industries Minister N Mangi has categorically stated that the people should be aware of their democratic rights and keep a close watch on the developmental schemes and projects being taken up by the Government.

Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of a community hall at Phougakchao Ekhai today, the Minister said people have a great responsibility to play in a democratic country.

In a democratic country, people are the supreme and the elected representatives would have to act in accordance to the wishes of the people.

So the people should be well-aware of the development schemes and projects being taken up and keep a close watch on the activities of the Government, he remarked.

Moreover, people should ensure that only those representatives who would be working in the interest of the people are elected during election so that our society can develop and more forward, the Minister observed.

While informing that a sum of Rs 30 lakhs being sanctioned every year as MLA�s Local Area Development Fund, which the MLAs concerned are expected to spend the amount for developmental activities in their respective Assembly Constituencies in consultation with the elected representatives of the local bodies, the Minister said the people should exert pressures on the elected representatives for taking up more and more developmental schemes and projects.

Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur district AS Aleng Shimray presided over the function attended by a host of elected representatives of local bodies as guests of honour.

Apart from inaugurating the community hall constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.20 lakhs under SGRY, the Minister also inspected the progress of the work two water tanks at Phougakchao Ekhai Mamang Leikai and Thokchom Leikai respectively which are being constructed from his Local Area Development Fund.

He also inspected the gate of the crematorium being constructed at Torbung Govindapur.

Mangi's exhortation to the people comes ahead of the election scheduled to be held next year.
