Experts highlighting fear of endangering some bird species in case the Tipaimukh Dam is constructed marked the observation on International Day for Biological Diversity at State guest House today.
The observance organised by Environment and Ecology Wing under the theme 'Prevent Bio-diversity in dry-land: Achieving the 2010 Bio-diversity Target' was held with Forest and Environment minister Th Debendra and additional chief secretary Saichuanna as the chief guest and functional president respectively.
deliberating on the theme, wild life activist Dr Kh Shamungou stressed on bio-diversity conservation in the Siroi-Kasom and Keilam-Barak ranges to check further denudation in the wild-life population of the State.
He also cautioned that construction of Tipaimukh Day would endanger existence of Langmeidong bird species as the dam site is the habitat area of four sub-species of the bird out of five found in India.
Population of wild fowls would also be severely affected by the multi-purpose project, Dr Shamungou said.
Life Science professor of Manipur university W Bishwanath speaking as resource person highlighted that ornamental fish species Chaca Chaca found in Jiribam area of Barak river and high on the demand list of European countries would be wiped out if natural flow of the river is disturbed.
Another MU professor (Chemistry) N Rajmohan emphasised on involving indigenous people to preserve myriad bio-diversity found in the State.
While the Forest Minister Th Debendra stressed on channelising human energy towards protection of environment and wild-life, the Additional Chief Secretary Saichuanna categorically stated that if one could not contribute in bio-diversity conservation then one also need not be an instrument of destruction.
