''There are approximately 17 million deaths annually from cardiovascular disease all over the globe out of which 7.2 million people die of ischemic heart disease and 5.5 million from cerebrovascular disease,'' said Dr.Premchand.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the 10th Annual Conference of Cardiological Society of India, North East Chapter at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Jubilee Hall in Imphal on Saturday, Dr.Premchand, chairman of the organising committee informed that 80 percent of these cardiovascular deaths occur in developing and newly industrialised countries like India.
He further informed that though deaths caused by this disease have declined distinctively in the western countries over the last twenty years or so, he added that it was increasing alarmingly in the developing countries.
Organised jointly by the Manipur Heart Care Society and the Department of Medicine and RIMS, Imphal the 2-day event is being held to give awareness to the people on the disease.
Dr.L Fimate, director of RIMS while addressing the congregation conveyed that the number of people suffering from this disease has been fast increasing in
developing countries.
While stating that the number suffering from the disease was also increasing in the state of Manipur, the director informed that equipments like Linux and CT scan would be install at RIMS within the next few months.
He further informed that there were plans to make the Cardiology and Neurology department into a full fledged department of RIMS.

Parijat lamented the high level of high patients and stated it unfortunate that the state hospital, Jawahar Lal Nehru (JN) hospital, do not have facilities to check the disease.
The Health Minister lamented that though RIMS had the facilities, patients were not satisfied with the treatment and had to go outside the state for treatment of the disease.
He however assured that the State Government was doing its best to avail equipments for the treatment of the disease.
