AMBA celebrates Diamond jubilee

Imphal, September 15 2011: Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker I Hemochandra has stressed on close coordination between the legislatures and members of the judiciary in order to strengthen administrative system in the State.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Diamond Jubilee celebration of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) at Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok today Hemochandra said even though the legislators frame law of the land the judiciary plays one of the most important role in ensuring a free and just society.

Moreover, there is need for consulting experts well versed in judicial matters so that any legislation framed by the legislature are flawless and practicable.

In his address MLA O Joy Singh said unlike in earlier civilization during which the king exercises both the powers of legislature and judiciary in the present age wherein democratic form of Government is the norm the judiciary ensures that right of every citizen is protected.

Regretting that career prospect of legal practitioners in Manipur is very limited due to absence of a high court of its own, he expressed confidence that as Manipur is going to have a separate High Court talented lawyers can expect to prosper and compete with the best in the country through subsequent advancement upto the Supreme Court level.

The MPP legislator desired that the ongoing construction of High court complex be completed without any further delay for it will certain produce lawyers to be reckoned with.

Advocate General N Kotiswar, who also addressed the gathering noted that in the North East the executives on most occasion performs the role of the judiciary inspite of the fact that the two entities are entirely different.

Reminding that through an effective judiciary system all outstanding issues could be solved in a non-violent manner, he said the AMBA celebrating its 60 years of existence is due to contribution of retired as well as expired legal luminaries.

referring to AMBA's ongoing effort for establishment of a library section in the court premises, Kotiswar said availability of such a facility is inevitable for proper understanding of new development in the legal system.

The jubilee celebration, during which obituaries were paid to departed members of AMBA, was also attended by Planning and Development Authority chairman Dr Kh Loken, MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar and a large number of AMBA members, including its president A Indrakumar.

As a part of the celebration, 20 senior advocates were felicitated for their service rendered to the society through presentation of shawls.
