An Art Gallery constructed with assistance from Indian Museum Kolkata was opened today at Manipur State Museum.
The opening function organised by the Manipur State Museum and Indian Museum Kolkata was graced by Speaker Dr S Budhichandra and Education Officer of Indian Museum Kolkata Dr Bundhopadhya as chief guest and president respectively.
At the Art Gallery which began construction in December 2005, paintings of various State artists painted in different media are being displayed.
The paintings also include portraits of Manipuri kings who ruled the State from 1891 to 1949.The Gallery also houses masterpieces of noted artists like Shyamo Sharma, H Shyamsunder, RK Chandrajitsana, Prof Th Tombi etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Budhichandra expressed desire to collect and display artefacts related to folklore and tradition of the State so as to preserve the dying folklore and tradition of the land.
He also exuded confidence of producing an extra budget specifically for development of the Manipur State Museum in the next budget session.
