Manipur Platform of Mass Organisations, Manipur Students' Assn, Delhi (MSAD) and All Assam Students' Association, Delhi are organising a one-day convention on 'Problems of North East Region' on August 13 at INA Hall, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
MP of CPI-M Sitaram Yachury, central secretariat member of CPI D Raja, CEC member of CPI Pramod Gogoi, National Council member of CPI L Sotinkumar, convenor of Manipur Platform of Mass Organisations Ksh Shanta and several student leaders would address the convention.
The main demands of the convention include to safeguard the territorial integrity of North Eastern States, immediate declaration of unilateral ceasefire of all the insurgent groups operating in the region and bring them to the negotiating table without any precondition, adequate fund for infrastructural developments of both the hills and the plains in the region, to lift the policy of downsizing of Govt posts along with creating more jobs for employment and fill the vacant posts, to take up immediate measures for the implementation of Rural Employment Guarantee Act and extend it to the whole North East region and establish more hydro-electric power projects to produce enough power to meet the demands for industries and domestic consumption.
To create more industries in public sector for generation of employment to the unemployed youths, to complete the construction of the Trans-Asian Highway Project via Imphal within the stipulated time, to materialise the proposed Delhi-Hanoi Railway link via Imphal, to upgrade National Highways in the North Eastern States to 4-lanes and provide Highway security forces for the security of these lifelines of the people living in the region, to upgrade the age of superannuation of the Govt employees at par with that of the Central Govt employees in the North Eastern region, to punish defecto political mafias by people's Court and not to give political asylum to the defectors i.e.bureaucrat politicians by any political party, to create a special economic package for the development of the economically poor and under-developed North Eastern States and to create an Anti-Corruption Tribunal to convict the corrupt and looters of public money were also among the demands to be raised during the convention.
