To overcome the recurring problem of water shortage faced by them specially during the period from March to May every year, villagers of Phungyar sub-divisional headquarters in Ukhrul district have kept in store 2 lakh litre of water from now onward for use in the lean season.
Taking into consideration of the problem, the villagers joined hand with the district adminkstrations in construction of a water tank having storing capacity of 2 lakhs litre under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
According to headman of Phungyar Village AS Shimrishang, as there is no source of water nearby to the village, the villagers have to walk for atleast 2 to 3 kms to fetch water every day.
Some of the villagers also either use cart or jeep and then share the water.

The problem of water is so acute specially during the period from March to May that at times we spend Rs 200 for 500 litres of water, the headman disclosed.
The construction of the water storage tank began in October last year anbd completed in February this year.
A total of 278 job card holders were reportedly involved in the construction work.
It is conveyed that rain water received in Phungyar town alone have been harvested to store in the water tank.
Interacting with The Sangai Express, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Phungyar Rang Peter explained that construction of the water harvesting tank was carried out under the skilled work component of NREGS.
So far, rain water from Phungyar town alone is being harvested and efforts would be soon made for harvesting rain water from Phungyar Higher Secondary School as well.
The water being stored in the tank would be utlised only during the lean season, the SDO added.
