As in other parts of the country, fitting tributes were paid to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the Martyrs� Day function held in different parts of the State today in commemoration of the death anniversary of the apostle of peace and non-violence.
The main function was organised by the State Government at Gandhi Memorial Hall here along with renditions of patriotic songs and observance of a two minute silence.
Governor Dr SS Sidhu led the Ministers, MLAs, officials of Civil and Police Departments and the general public who attended the function in offering floral tributes to the statue of the Mahatma.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee also observed Martyrs� Day at Congress Bhawan today and party president Gaikhangam, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, AICC secretaries Sanjoy Bhopana and Randy Thomas paid homage and floral tributes to the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi along with other MPPC office bearers, leaders of frontal organisations, cells and party workers.
They also observed a two minute silence as a mark of respect to the Mahatma.
The day is also being observed as Anti-Leprosy Day in recognition of the humanitarian services rendered by the Father of the Nation towards the cause of eradicating the scourge of Leprosy.
At Thoubal district, the event was observed under the aegis of District Leprosy Society at BASU ground, Khangabok highlighting the theme of �Help eradication of Leprosy and discrimination has no place�.
Prior to the formal function, an Anti-Leprosy rally was also taken out from Thoubal Athokpam to BASU ground by school students.
Presentation of gifts to disabled patients and Mister show on the theme of �Health is wealth� displayed by All Manipur Body Building Association (AMBA) were some of the highlights of the event.
SLO NLEP Manipur Dr L Shantikumar Singh, CMO Thoubal Dr Ksh Manglem Singh and retired Joint Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department Dr M Rajendra Singh graced the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Lions Club of Imphal East and Lioness Club of Imphal East also observed Anti-Leprosy Day today at the District Leprosy Hospital located at Chingmeirong along with distribution of essential commodities like rice, dal, mustard oil, salt, etc to the leprosy patients of the Hospital.
