Troops of 7 Assam Rifles of 57 Mountain Division reportedly apprehended an underground activist after a brief shootout in general area of Thanga (Moirang) at around 7.45 pm yesterday.
According to a PIB Defence Wing statement today, after receiving specific information about movement of UG cadres with weapon from Thanga toward Moirang, troops of 7 AR established a mobile check post at Thanga at around 7 pm.
At around 7.45 pm, as the troops started search of vehicles of a marriag procession, a suspected cadre started running away from the troops.
On being challenged to halt, the suspected cadre fired from a 9 mm pistol towards the troops.
Exercising restrain to avoid any collateral damage to th persons of th marriage possession in the near vicinity, the troops fired only one single shot an injured the suspected cadre who was subsequently overpowered by troops.
Later, the cadre was identified as SS Sgt Maj Ningthoujam Samananda Singh of RPF (32) s/o N Budhi Singh of Nongmaikhong Mayai Leikai.
The UG alongwith the recovered 9 mm pistol with magazine and 11 rounds were handed over to Moirang Police Station after providing medical aid at the unit hospital, the PIB Defence Wing added.
