Students' Welfare Association for the Blind (SWAB) conferred Laishram Gouramani Memorial Award for Visually Handicapped 2008-09 to Moirangthem Sunita of Nagapmapal Kangjabi Leirak in a function held at Government Ideal Blind School, Takyelpat today.
Donor of the award, Laishram Nabakishore presented the award to Sunita in the presence of a huge gathering.
MP Dr T Meinya and Manipur Women Development Corporation Chairperson AK Mirabai graced the occasion as chief guest and president respectively.
Laishram Nabakishore and SWAB founder president Shonlien Kiloung were also members of the dais as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr T Meinya assured to extend all possible help in the construction of girls hostel for visually challenged persons.
He also lauded L Nabakishore for encouraging the visually handicapped persons by instituting an award for them.
AK Mirabai while addressing the gathering said that visually challenged persons can do many things which normal persons cannot do.
She also assured to put her best effort in making up the requirements of the school and visually handicapped persons.
Laishram Nabakishore said that people must extend support and encourage the visually challenged persons so that they can join in the mainstream competitions.
Maintaining that visually challenged persons have been participating and occupying significant positions in many events, Nabakishore also expressed belief that the gathering too would extend support to visually handicapped persons so that they can perform better in future.
The award is donated by Laishram Nabakishore in the name of his late father L Gouramani.
The award includes cash of Rs 3000, a citation and a memento.
