Mortal remains of Yaiskul Constituency MLA Elangbam Kunjeswar put to rest

Lamka, September 18, 2009: MLA of Yaiskul Assembly Constituency and Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board, Elangbam Kunjeswar Singh, more popularly known as EK Singh among his colleagues and well-wishers, breathed his last from a personal illness at Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi yesterday.

He was 78 and is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters.

Born on January 1, 1932, Kunjeswar was better known for his social works.

As an IAS officer, he had also contributed his mite in the administration of the State as head of various Government Departments.

Making a foray into politics, he was elected to the 6th Manipur Legislative Assembly held in 1995 from the 14-Yaiskul Assembly Constituency on BJP ticket.

But later, he joined Indian National Congress and went on to become the Minister of Planing, CADA and Law and Legislative Affairs.

In the election to the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly held in 2007, Kunjeswar was again elected on Congress ticket from the same constituency and was subsequently appointed as the Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board.

During his lifetime, Kunjeswar had also held the top post of many sports organisations including the president of Manipur Hockey Association for seven years.

Congress leaders pay their last respect to the departed soul

The mortal remains of Kunjeswar was brought to Imphal today morning.

At Congress Bhavan here, where the mortal remains was kept for public homage, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and MPCC president Gaikhangam led the people in offering floral tribute and paying their last respect.

Ministers, MLAs and other party leaders were also present at the occasion.

From Congress Bhavan, the coffin carrying the mortal remains of Kunjeswar was brought to the complex of Manipur Legislative Assembly where Speaker Dr S Budhichandra, Chief Minister, MPCC president, Ministers, leaders of various political parties, MLAs and officials of the Assembly Secretariat paid their last respect to the departed soul.

Mourning the demise of MLA Kunjeswar, the Government of Manipur declared holiday in all its offices and educational institutions and hoisted the National tri-colour flag at half-mast.

Meanwhile, many individuals and social organisations have expressed shock and conveyed condolence over the untimely demise of MLA Kunjeswar.

Conveying his grief and sorrow to the bereaved family, Member of Lok Sabha Thangso Baite said Kunjeswar was not only an efficient IAS officer during his career in Government services but also a distinguished legislator with great vision and integrity.

His untimely demise is a great loss to the people of Manipur, Baite added.

Imphal East District Congress Committee, Thoubal Block Congress Committee and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Block Congress have also condoled the demise of Kunjeswar and prayed for peaceful repose of the departed soul in its heavenly abode.

Manipur Secretariat Services Association, Nupilan and Khongjom War Memorial Society, Manipur Mahila Kalyan Samiti and Young Voluntary Organisation, Wangkhei have also mourned at the demise of Kunjeswar.
