The corpse of Manmaya alias Manju who was shot dead for resisting attempt to rape her is still lying in Senapati police station with family members and people refusing the claim the corpse until the accused now in the custody of NSCN (IM) is awarded exemplary punishment.
Post mortem examination of the corpse was conducted yesterday at RIMS Imphal.
To discuss the issue, two separate public meetings were held today at Khatumai, native village of the deceased girl and at Senapati public ground.
The meeting at Khatumai was attended by representatives of the Eden Garden Village Authority native village of accused Hormi alias Ningthou Liangmai and representatives of Khatumai Village Authority.
The meeting was also participated by leaders of the Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union and All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union.
During the meeting, the Eden Garden Village Authority offered Rs 20,000 to perform the last rites of Manju.
Even as the Khatumai Village Authority did not object to the offer, the Village Authority maintained that the last rites of the deceased will not be performed until and unless the accused is awarded commensurate punishment.
On the other hand, during the public meeting at Senapati public ground, people shouted slogans demanding exemplary punishment to the murderer.
The meeting resolved that accused Hormi now in the custody of NSCN (IM) should be given capital punishment within 10 days.
