Imphal, April 13:
Taking serious note of the phenomenal increase of crimes against women, Nupi Samaj, Association of Muslim Women's organisations and All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation have condemned all such cases of violation women's rights and have demanded commensurate punishment to all the culprits.
Talking to reporters today at the office of All Manipur Students' Organisation, president of Nupi Samaj Taruni noted that torture of a married woman by her husband and in-laws is a serious threat to the right to live of the woman.
Referring to the case of Nabisa Begum (28) w/o Atabudin of Thoubal Khekman who filed a complaint to the Nupi Samaj on December 23 last alleging that she was tortured severely by her in-laws, Taruni disclosed that Nabisa was kept aloof from her husband since the wedding day.
According to her complaint, Nabisa was informed by her in-laws that Atab had left for a far away place.
After some days, Nabisa happened to meet Atab one day for which she was thrashed blue and black in the night of the same day.
It is reported that without her consent, she was divorced from her husband according to an agreement between the her paternal family and Atab's family in presence of the local club members with a provision of Rs 10,000 to her paternal family.
After her divorce Nabisa took shelter at the Nupi Samaj.
Later her mother and the wife of the local pradhan came for Nabisa claiming that the two families have settled the issue of divorce with payment of another Rs 15,000 to her paternal family.
Asserting that the family of Atabudin never responded despite repeated summons by the three bodies to come to the office of Nupi Samaj, Taruni noted that such treatment of women as a commodity is humiliation of all womenfolk.
